Maroondah Secondary College located in Croydon Victoria and 'Cricket Excellence' Cricket Coaching are pleased to team up together once again to provide 'Excellence in sport – Cricket'.  

This program is a sports specific taster program that provides current school students with exceptional opportunities to develop their sporting potential towards an advanced level.

These opportunities, whilst acknowledging personal athletic aspirations, also broaden horizons by developing decision making, communication and leadership skills, as well as skills and understanding related to career pathways within the sport and recreation industries and the community at large.

At the same time, particular emphasis is placed upon the need to maintain and improve performances in continuing academic studies.

 

             Program aims:

  • To broaden students overall understanding of Cricket, provide them with the opportunity to develop their sporting potential towards an ‘elite’ level and prepare for careers, pathways and further studies in the sport and recreation industry.
  • To provide students with quality coaching, education, resources and feedback relevant to sports, cricket and personal development.
  • To educate students to become competent participants, fair and respected sports players and people in cricket, sport and general life.

* Students are required to have their own suitable cricket footwear, tracksuit pants, shorts, white polo shirts and hat. Students are required to have a cricket bat and their own protective cricket equipment to participate in training sessions. It is compulsory for all students to wear a helmet when batting in any competitive training.

Training balls, indoor facilities and where needed; sunscreen, are all provided.

Program content                       

  • OH&S, Safety and injury prevention for cricket
  • Batting and Bowling techniques
  • Fielding and Wicket keeping techniques
  • Cricket history, demographics and cultures
  • Spirit of cricket, cricket ethics & racial vilification  
  • Laws of cricket and respect for umpires
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Averages, economy & strike rates, wagon wheels, statistics
  • Match preparation, tactics and strategies  
  • Mental / Physical conditioning skills & diet and nutrition
  • Practical coaching and training drills for cricket
  • Develop a careers and sports goal-setting plan
  • Practical indoor net sessions & video analysis

The program operates at Maroondah Secondary College on Mondays from 3.30pm – 6.15pm. All indoor training sessions will be held at Topline Sports indoor cricket centre in Bayswater.

 

Application Process:        

·        Students must be in year 10, 11 or 12, be attending a Victorian Secondary School full time, and be playing for a registered Australian Cricket Club. Classes are limited to 12 students. All prospective students must fill in an application form and may also be required to attend an interview.

*Application forms are due no later than May 28, 2007.

Schools and students will be notified of the application outcome and enrolments by June 4, 2007.  Interviews will be held on May 31.

 Course duration and fees:

The course will run for 16 weeks from July to November 2007 and costs $300.00 per student (GST inclusive). *The student is responsible for any extra costs incurred for public transport to/from indoor training sessions).

*This program has been designed as an entry level taster course in sports excellence, specifically aimed at Cricket. This program is not a Vocational Education and Training course and does not offer a nationally recognised qualification, certificate, statement of attainment or credit towards the VCE. Students will however, receive a certificate of completion and written assessment report upon satisfactory completion of the program.

 

It should also be noted that 'Cricket Excellence' Cricket Coaching is currently working in consultation with Cricket Australia with the aim of developing this program into a nationally recognised VET in the VCE sports specific Cricket course. The current program has been designed as a bridging and introductory course to this.
